Recruitment Event: Bootcamp and Tryout!
Mark your calendars
If you want to tryout next month, YOU MUST RSVP TO BOTH THE BOOTCAMP AND TRYOUT BY SENDING ME AN EMAIL TO CONFIRM. Please read the rest of the post carefully, as there is a lot of important information! More details and clarifications to come in future emails as well. You will receive dates and times once you RSVP.
Bootcamp: If you plan to attend this bootcamp, RSVP to recruiting@burningriverrollergirls.com ASAP.
Held at Pla-Mor Roller Rink, 22466 Shore Center Drive, Euclid, OH
We will be holding a bootcamp three weeks before the tryout to see where you stand with your skating and derby skills and will be giving you feedback as to what needs work in order to pass the January tryout. It's going to be a lot to go over in just 2 hours, so come early to gear up and be ready to roll for the next 2 hours without much of a break.
Tryouts: If you plan to attend this tryout, RSVP to recruiting@burningriverrollergirls.com ASAP.
Held at Pla-Mor Roller Rink, 22466 Shore Center Drive, Euclid, OH
Skaters trying out in January need to be ready to be immediately added to the farm team, The Pyromaniacs, as well as jump into league practices where BRRG skaters are in full-swing, training hard for both the travel and home season that is about to start. Due to this, skaters will have to pass a skills test at a higher level than those trying out in the post-season. Please be sure to thoroughly review the skills below and start working on them.
Required Skills
In addition to the regular BRRG skills test, skaters will also need to pass the following:
- 3 seconds to come to a stop from fast pack pace
- 3 seconds to get up to fast pack speed from a stop
- hockey stop (hockey stop doesn’t have to be perfect but must demonstrate an understanding of what it is)
- Toe stop run
- Duck walk run
- Scrimmage situations: advanced pack skills, awareness of teammates, opponents and both jammers, as well as communicating that in the pack/drill
- WFTDA rules test
- Many skills need to be performed bi-laterally! Meaning turning/falling front to back both directions etc. for skills
BRRG Membership
For skaters that have passed all the tryouts will become a full BRRG member in February. Member skaters are expected to attend league practices (see attendance requirement below), and will also be placed on our farm team, The Pyromaniacs, which have their own team practices in addition to league practices. At this time they also become eligible to tryout for both travel teams when they are held (TBD by captains, we just had one at the end of November so it may be a while), and also be eligible to be drafted to a home team if and when a home team draft is called (we just had our main draft at the beginning of December, so this may also be a while before another is called). EXPECT TO REMAIN ON THE PYROMANIACS FOR A WHILE. There is a chance you'll get drafted to a home or travel team, however there is no guarantee, many skaters in the past 2 seasons have remained on the farm team for a good portion or all of their first season with the BRRG, some are continuing into their 2nd season on the Pyromaniacs, there are even derby skaters with previous bouting experience that have remained on the farm team for a bit of time.
BRRG Member Attendance Requirement
Skaters need to make 7 points a month minimum to stay in good standing. A point is received for skating 75% of any league or team practice, as well as attending league meetings (usually the 2nd Thursday of each month at 8 pm). Once again, it is highly recommended that skaters attend as many practices as possible to maximize their derby skills, especially if they want to eventually be put on a home or travel team.
(ONLY for women interested in joining the Burning River Roller Girls)

Required Gear
The below list of gear is required for new skaters. Penny-pinching is not wise when
it comes to buying good protection. If you are going to buy used equipment, check
it out carefully. Try the equipment on and make sure it all fits properly. Injuries
occur when loose-fitting equipment slides out of the way. Keep your gear well organized
and stored in a well ventilated, dry area. Check your equipment frequently for early
signs of wear and tear. "Take care of your equipment and it will take care
of you!"

* Quad speed skates
Indoor wheels - Most packages can be upgraded to have better wheels. The
following are examples of popular wheels used within our league: Fugitives, Flat-Outs,
Tuners, Mojos, Zodiacs.
* Skateboard helmet
* Knee pads
Quality kneepads are crucial for this sport. Buying good ones now will help prevent
possible knee injuries down the line. If you cannot afford to buy quality gear you
also won't be able to afford the doctor bills when you get injured. The following
are popular brands/models:
- 187 Pro Knees Kneepads
- TSG FORCE III Knee Pads
* Elbow pads
* Wrist guards
* Mouth guard

Where To Buy Gear
Any sporting goods store should have some of the needed gear, however kneepads and
skates are more difficult to find. We strongly recommend getting fitted for skates
versus buying blindly online! The following are where we get most of our gear:
