BRRG/Roller Derby press: 2009

Wolstein Center Debut Scores Big

Black and Blue 4Black & Blue 4: Whip it Good! was truly a great night for all. The league (normally four home teams) divided into two large teams to bout for charity. Team Black skated for Toys for Tots. Team Blue skated for Coats for Kids. As the skaters entered the arena for introductions, each team represented their charity in style. Team Blue skated out donning coats for donation, while Team Black brandished new toys, escorted by the 3D Battalion, 25th Marines of Brook Park, Ohio, our newest friends and fans!

Black and Blue 4The score teetered between Team Black and Team Blue throughout the bout. The teams were so evenly matched that it came down to the last jam of the evening. The crowd was on their feet, going wild to watch the final point tally on the scoreboard. Team Black wins 91-90.

That’s not the only thing that had the crowd going wild. At halftime, the Burning River Roller Girls new recruits (lovingly referred to as “Fresh Meat”) participated in the annual rite of passage: No Rules Full Contact Musical Chairs. It was the most exciting musical chairs we’ve seen yet, with brute force vs. agility, pushes and shoves, chairstealing, denials, push downs, knock downs and fall downs. In the end, it was Veruca Salty that was crowned Musical Chair Queen.

Black and Blue 4So in the end, the charities scored with coats and toys and monetary donations. We had a very exciting bout, we welcomed many first-time derby spectators that can’t wait for the 2010 Season to begin, and we made a lot of new friends.

Yeah, it was a good day.
